The Hon. Eleni Bakopanos

The 2010 Woman of the Year luncheon took place on Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Mount Stephen Club, 1440 rue Drummond (St. Catherine).

Woman of the Year committee received several excellent submissions for the MCW annual award. All contenders are outstanding women who have contributed in various ways and means, towards the improvement in the quality of life for women and our society.  The decision was very difficult as all candidates are well-deserving.

We are delighted and honored to have the Honorable Eleni Bakopanos, PC, former Member of Parliament, Senior Director of Government Relations at McGill University, as the MCW Woman of the Year for 2010.  Congratulations Eleni!

The Honorable Eleni Bakopanos has accomplished so much and has made a difference in our society.  She is the first Greek born woman to have been elected to Parliament and has dedicated her life and career to the advancement of women, especially women from Montreal's ethnic communities.  Eleni is Senior Director of Government Relations at McGill University and former Member of Parliament.

The theme for 2010 competition of WOTY is public service.  The women nominated this year have worked in public service and on issues that impact women's lives.  The candidate had to have contributed to the community and portrayed the following:

  • concerned with the welfare of women
  • worked to promote public issues e.g. health, pay equity, child care, women on public boards
  • demonstrated leadership, courage and resourcefulness
  • initiated innovative actions, programs or projects
  • been an inspiration to others
